The motivational reason for the extraordinarily experience is that Kenya is a host to a total of 1,139 different species of birds according to eBird data 2025.This impressive high bird’s diversity and the distribution of species in Kenya is due to:

    1. A broad spectrum of environmental types ranging from sea level to the second highest altitude in Africa (Mount Kenya). With variety of habitat types such as: – Desert, semi-desert, grassland, bush, bushed grassland, shrub savannah, savannah, scrub, woodland. Forests – (lowland rainforest, intermediate rainforest and dry forest), riparian, lowland, highland or mountain, bamboo, moorland, alpine zone. Swamps – (palms, mangrove swamps and papyrus swamps). Wetlands – (soda lakes, freshwater lakes, sewage treatment ponds, irrigated fields and temporarily flooded lands). Coastal – (beaches, tidal estuaries and mudflats). Gardens, cultivation and plantation.
    2. Many permanent resident species of birds.
    3. Numerous migratory species including: – Palearctic migrants – visitors from the northern hemisphere during the northern autumn and winter following breeding in Europe & Asia. Intra-African migrants – these movements are not all alike, some birds’ species move northward into Kenya after breeding further south. Others move south-eastward into Kenya following nesting in central Africa and some are visitors from areas north of Kenya.
    4. Kenya lies equally on the equator. Being a tropical region the alternation of wet and dry season is most prominent climatic phenomenon contributing to a rich bird’s diversity.

Kenya is also home to 10 endemic species of birds. These birds cannot be seen anywhere else in the world unless you arrange and plan for a Birding Tour in Kenya. These endemics include:

  1. Hinde’s Babbler – Vulnerable
  2. Sharpe’s Longclaw – Endangered
